E. coli is known as the primary cause behind urinary tract infections and now Cranberry has been scientifically proven as a natural cure to this common problem. According to a recent study by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, cranberries hinder the ability of E. coli to stick to the walls of the urinary track, hence expelling from the body during urination.
The scientists at Worcester Polytechnic utilized atomic force microscopy which allows one to measure the adhesion levels of E. Coli to the cells of the urinary tract, showing the E. Coli's hooks curling up and only lethargically holding on to the walls because of the cranberry.
About urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a very common type of infection caused by bacteria and occur in both men and women. The infection moves up to the bladder causing a bladder infection called cystitis. If not stopped, it can continue to travel up to the ureters and kidney causing pyelonephritis.
Women are generally more prone to UTIs than men due to a shorter urethra.
Symptoms of UTI
- Urgent need to urinate even after emptying bladder.
- Burning sensation during urination.
