Resveratol from red grapesA recent study shows that adults who consumed 8 ounces of red wine per day (1/3 of a regular wine bottle) for 3 weeks in a row had a significant increase in a certain type of cell responsible for repairing the lining of arteries normally damaged from a heart attack or stroke.

Grape seed extract (resveratol) in red wine aids in repair

The active ingredient in red wine, grape seed extract i.e. resveratrol, is a strong antioxidant and found to help with any weak links in the cardiovascular system (heart and arteries). Since your cell linings are only single-cell thick, once damaged they are not easy to repair and make future heart attacks or strokes more risky. They is also a greater risk of plaque formation or other disorders.

The study showed that high doses of these endothelial progenitor cells (which are responsible for the repair) were found in subjects that consumed red wine on a daily basis.

“From these studies it is clear that resveratrol acts both indirectly (through adipose tissue) and directly (through endothelial cells) to prevent cardiovascular disease.” - American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
