A recent study has shown that individuals above the age of 50 who had very low levels of folic acid in their system had a 34 percent higher risk of hearing loss. The study suggests that the deficiency causes circulatory problems in the the capillaries of inside of the ear, hence constricting blood flow.
In addition to restricting blood flow, the lack of folic acid also caused a build up of a byproduct called homocysteine which further cause circulation issues, pushing the risk of hearing loss up to a whopping 64 percent.
Now since it affects the inner ear by reducing blood flow to the region, one can expect it to cause a host of other common ear problems associated with aging. This includes vertigo (caused by inner ear imbalance) and even ringing in the ear.
