The Mayo Clinic had recently finished a phase 2 clinical trial that confirms EGCG, the active ingredient in green tea, slows down cancer in patients diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
Green tea cancer study
CLL is a form of cancer that affects the bone marrow where new blood cells are formed. Unfortunately since it is these cells that are meant to fight off cancer, their mutation makes this form of cancer toublesome to overcome. In the Mayo clinic study, the consumption of the active ingredient in green tea showed 69 percent of patients with enlarged lymph nodes seeing a reduction of 50 percent or more of their lymph nodes.
Benefits of green tea
The main benefit of consuming EGCG from green tea is that it doesn't have harmful side effects like the more invasive cancer fighting drugs. EGCG is found to defend the healthy cells while only attacking cancerous ones, unlike cancer drugs which can't tell the difference. Furthermore, because there is almost no toxicity associated with consuming green tea, there is a smaller chance of the problem recurring again.
As always, when it comes to serious diseases one can't solely depend on nutrients as treatment and will need to couple it with medical care and treatment to make it most effective.
